“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.”
Have a SMART goal concerning the change you want from our
working together.
Specific
Be very specific about what you want.Make sure the goal is measurable. It needs to
be realistic.
Measurable
Define your goal in sensory specific terms so you know when
you have achieved a meaningful goal.
Affect
Affect or the emotions you feel when you think about your
goal, the stronger the emotions, the higher the motivation to achieve your
goal.
Realistic
Your goal must be humanly possible and possible for you.
Timed
You need to set a timeframe for your goal so that you will
work towards it.
State in the Positive:
Be clear in what you want, because it is specific. There are a thousand ways to not get what you
don't want. Your basic motivation
mechanisms cannot deal with negations.
Sensory Based
Make sure your goal is real and measurable. You must be able
to measure, hold, see, or hear it.
Know that it is you that achieves the goal.
Nobody else can do it for you. Only you can work towards the
goal, others won't.
When the goal is achieved will fit in with your life? Is it
worth the price you have to pay to get it?
Will the goal cause unsatisfactory effects on your life?
Make sure that you consider where, when, and with whom you want this outcome
and with whom you do not want it.
Achieving a goal will mean that you have to think in certain
ways. You have to feel certain things and you have to do certain things. You
have to do certain things both to get what you want and to keep it.
What do you want? State it in the positive.
What will you be seeing, hearing and feeling when you have
achieved the goal?
Is the goal within your power to achieve?
What would motivate you to put in the effort to achieve?
What will change when you have your goal?
Who will be affected by this change?
What won't happen anymore after you've changed?
Where and when do you want it?
How will you be feeling as a result of achieving the goal?
What will you be doing?
How will be thinking?
What abilities do you have that you can use to achieve the
goal?
What are you going to start doing right now towards the
goal?
Answer all the questions then answer them again, multiple times, until you have a solid goal.
